North Alabama Dance Center was founded in 1983 to offer young people and adults a quality dance education, with a special emphasis on the discipline of ballet.

Barbara Ellen Smartt, Director, has crafted a syllabus based on accepted ballet standards.  A complete dance education is offered in ballet, pointe, modern, lyrical, jazz and tap.  Students are individually placed based on their ability, experience, and age.  A highly trained and competent staff of instructors is available to conduct classes for students age three through adults.

NADC Curriculum

NADC has a terrific class schedule for every age group with material, music selection and costumes that are all age-appropriate and modest.
PRESCHOOLERS:  NADC's youngest dancers enjoy a class designed just for their age, ability and attention span.  They learn the basics in ballet, tap and tumbling.  Special emphasis is placed on right and left activities, improving coordination and flexibility and teaching a love for dance!

BALLET - NADC recognizes ballet as the most important field of study.  Correct body alignment, strength and flexibility learned in ballet will greatly aid the dancer in jazz, tap and modern classes.

JAZZ - NADC teaches a lyrical based jazz syllabus, supplemented with hip-hop influences.  Like ballet, jazz class greatly enhances flexibility and strength.

TAP - NADC teaches all styles of tap.  Tap work will give the student stamina, a better sense of rhythm, and enhance their performance skills.

MODERN - NADC is proud to offer modern training for their students.  The syllabus pulls from all the Modern Master teachers.  The class is a great contrast to ballet which requires control and rigid body positions.  Modern dance teaches the student to move with abandon and great power.
POINTE - Since NADC stresses ballet, we also offer pointe classes for students who meet the age and technical requirements.

Repeated failure to pick up a dancer promptly will result in a $5.00 per five-minute penalty.

Dress Code

For Preschool 1, Preschool 2, Combination Class, Half and Half Class and Pearl level Classes: Black Leotard and Pink Tights for ALL CLASSES!

For Diamond Level through Gold Level (these are all classes DMA eligible and older): All dancewear must be true “DANCEWEAR”… Capezio, Danskin, Bloch, Body Wrappers, SoDanza,…etc.  It must fit your body tight so your instructors can see your muscle definition.  You are NOT ALLOWED to wear “non-dancewear” such as Sophie shorts, t-shirts, sweat pants in any class except tap.

FOR JAZZ AND MODERN:  All Dance wear must be solid colors (no stripes, polka dots…) You may wear a solid leotard or 2 piece dancewear…i.e. dance shorts and a separate dance top… HOWEVER  all dance tops MUST be the long version that comes all the way down to meet the top of the shorts (in other words no mid-drift tops will be allowed!) All dance shorts MUST BE a couple of inches long if you wear them with bare legs.  If you wear the booty shorts you must wear tights underneath.  Please keep in mind you walk through the lobby where there are dads, brothers and granddads--- this is why we will not allow mid-drift tops or booty shorts with out tights.

FOR BALLET: All dancers must wear a solid Black Ballet skirt.  This is the only way you will be permitted to take ballet class without tights.

FOR TAP: Dancers are allowed to wear sweat pants and t-shirts over your dancewear

Notifying Parent if their dancer is out of Dress Code:  If a student comes to class out of dress code they will not be permitted to take class—they will have to sit and watch.  Every time a dancer is not in dress code they will be asked to go to the office and let Mrs. Kaye know they are watching class. If this happens 2 times parents will be mailed the official notification that they signed and addressed to themselves at registration.  This policy is designed to keep the parent informed and to encourage  them to have a very active role in making sure that their child is coming to class prepared.  Dance is a great vehicle to promote self discipline and responsibility--this is why we expect students to be respectful of their teachers, their classmates and the dress code .
